A portrait dissolved into specks of light on black. Every lit pixel becomes a loose grain of dust in the colour of the light that falls on it, at full brightness: a cold blue rim along the hair and shoulder, a warm red kicker on the lips and chin, and a scatter of faint stars in the dark around them. The dust thins with the light instead of dimming, so shadows stay black and highlights turn into dense glowing edges. It is made for low-key pictures; a bright one turns into a dense field of grey dust. Replace the image or video, then edit the grain size, the tone curve and the two inks.
How this texture works
Stardust Rim dissolves a low-key image or video into loose specks of light on black. Color mode is Luminous, so every lit pixel becomes a grain of dust in the colour of the light that falls on it, at full brightness: a cool rim on the hair, a warm kicker on the face. The dust thins with the light instead of dimming, so shadows stay black and highlights turn into dense glowing edges.
Tips
- Use a dark picture with coloured rim lights. A bright picture turns into a dense field of grey dust.
- Gamma controls how quickly the dust thins out. Raise it to keep only the strongest edges.
- Dither pixel size sets the grain size. Larger grains read as glitter rather than dust.
- Switch Color mode to Mono to draw all the dust in the Foreground colour.
Questions
How do I make a glowing dust portrait?
Use a low-key portrait with coloured rim light and load it into the Image slot. The dust keeps the colour of each light, so a blue and a red light give two coloured edges. Adjust Gamma until the background stays black.
Why does my bright photo look grey and busy?
This preset turns every lit pixel into dust, so a bright picture fills the frame. Use a darker photo, or raise Gamma to thin the dust out.
