An editable ASCII texture preset. Replace the source image, tune character density, contrast and gamma, choose monochrome, duotone or original colour, and add glow, scanlines or paper grain. Built with the native HorizonX editor and an original Canvas 2D renderer.
How this texture works
Drop in a photo or a short video and the editor redraws it as a grid of characters. Each cell measures how bright that part of the image is and picks a character from the ramp: light areas get dense characters such as @ and 8, dark areas get a space or a dot. The preview redraws as you move any control, so you can tune the look on your own image before you export it.
Tips
- Start with Columns. Fewer columns give bold, readable characters; more columns keep the detail of a face or a product.
- Type your own Character ramp, from dark to light, to change the texture: digits read as data, letters as text art.
- Glyph coverage decides the shadows: selective leaves the darkest areas empty, full covers the whole picture with characters.
- Raise Contrast before Brightness when the subject melts into the background.
Questions
Can I use a video instead of a photo?
Yes. The Image slot accepts a video, and the characters update frame by frame in the preview.
Why does my ASCII image look stretched?
Characters are taller than they are wide. Adjust Cell aspect until circles in your image look round again.
