A photographic print screen: the picture stays visible underneath while a grid of dots grows through its darker body and thins out into the light. The screen reads each image on its own terms, so it lands the same way on a bright frame and a dark one. Replace the image or video, then edit the grid, the tonal window, the ink and the dot opacity.
How this texture works
Halftone Field screens your image or video with a grid of dots, like a printed photograph seen up close. The Character ramp steps from a large square through a small square to a dot, so the dots are biggest in the shadows and shrink to nothing in the light. The picture stays visible underneath the white ink. Auto level reads each image on its own terms, so the screen sits the same way on a bright frame and a dark one.
Tips
- Columns sets the screen size. Around 68 gives visible print dots; lower values make a bold poster screen.
- Raise Contrast to push more of the picture into the largest dots or into empty paper.
- Set Photo background to 0 to keep only the dots, like a one-colour print.
- Add Paper grain from the Finish section for a printed feel.
Questions
How do I make a halftone effect from a photo?
Replace the sample in the Image slot with your picture. The dots size themselves by tone straight away. Use Columns for the dot size, Contrast for the balance of light and dark, and Ink for the colour.
Can I make a halftone with coloured dots?
Yes. Change Colour to original and each dot takes the colour of the picture under it, or pick any Ink colour in mono.
