An original mark-grid texture: each cell picks a mark from a ramp ordered by the ink it lays down, dithered so gradients climb instead of terracing. Scanlines finish the screen without touching removed background. Edit cell size, stroke weight, tone, ink colour and the optional rain live; swap in your own image or video.
How this texture works
Midnight Terminal rebuilds your image or video as a grid of terminal marks on a near-black field. Each cell picks a mark from a ramp ordered by how much ink it lays down, and dithering lets gradients climb smoothly instead of breaking into steps. The ink is a pale grey in Mono, and light scanlines finish the screen. Four thresholds in the Tone section set where one kind of mark gives way to the next.
Tips
- Cell size sets the size of the marks. Small cells keep detail; larger cells give a coarse terminal look.
- Mark weight changes the stroke thickness of every mark.
- Animate rain is on but Rain is at 0. Raise Rain to make marks fall down the columns, and use Speed to set the pace.
- Switch Color mode to Original to keep the colours of your picture in the marks.
Questions
How do I make a terminal or Matrix style effect from a video?
Load your video into the Image or video slot. Each frame is drawn as terminal marks. Raise Rain for falling columns, and change Ink to green if you want the classic terminal colour.
Can I remove the background behind my subject?
There is a Background removal control in the Finish section. Raise it to drop the background around your subject, and the scanlines stay off the removed area.
